Noun

Common nouns: generic names for a person, place, thing, or abstract idea, like “love.”

pen, dog, table, music, city, teacher, love, hate

Where is my pen?

My dog is on the chair.

Proper nouns: names given to specific people, cities, companies, countries etc.

John, Samsung, London, Brazil

We live in London.

Pronoun

replaces a noun

I, you, he, she, it, they, them,  

Mary is American; she is beautiful.  Put it on the table.

Adjective

describes a noun

a, an, the, 6, 7, 8, some, good, big, red, interesting

My dogs are big.

I have seven dogs.

Verb

action or state

eat, sing, work, is, are, was

I like candy.  I am a student.  I run in the park.

Adverb

describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb

quickly, silently, well, badly, very, really

My dog eats quickly. He is very hungry.  He eats really quickly.

Preposition

indicates something’s relative location or time to a noun

to, at, after, on,

We went to school on Monday.

Conjunction

joins words or groups of words.

and, but, because

I like dogs and cats. I like dogs, but I don't like cats.

Interjection

short remark, often showing emotion.

oh!, ouch!, hi!, Hello

Ouch! That hurts! Hi! Well, I don't know.

1. Noun

a. A short remark, which often shows emotion.
